Advantage of AMF process is the use of separate Rim Mold.  This isolated forming process allows our engineers to research and test various rim barrel shapes which is crucial to the overall structural rigidity and strength of a wheel.

Casting and Forming

There are two major casting methods; the most common is gravity casting, followed by low pressure casting.

Gravity casting is where molten metal is simply poured into a mold. This manufacturing process is inexpensive and allows for wheels to be pumped out in large batches, however it yields a wheel which is heavy, unbalanced and low in strength. The simple act of pouring molten metal into a mold results in a wheel with a poor grain structure with low metal density, yet its fast and simple production method results in an low-priced wheel.  On the other hand, die-forged wheels utilize a metal lump of aluminum/alloy which is first heated, then utilizes a strong press to compress the metal, resulting in metal grain which is tightly formed with a high metal density.

Each method has its pros and cons.  Depending on its application, the gravity casting method's advantage allows for a wider range of designs as the melted aluminum is able to flow into a more complex mold design, however this often leads to a heavy product as the complex design may not yield the strength it might need.  The forged process utilizes the compression of material to gain strength, however its root strength is determined by the material used; the final design also relies more on the final machining process.

The Weds casting process uses a less commonly used process known as low pressure casting, which pressurizes the selected molten aluminum alloy into the mold, creating a tight grain structure and high metal density. The tighter grain structure offered from low pressure casting allows for a wheel which is significantly lighter than a gravity cast wheel whilst offering higher material strength. Although low pressure casting has higher manufacturing costs than gravity casting, it is less expensive than the forging process whilst offering similar strength.  Another benefit with low pressure casting is the ability to create more complex designs over forged wheels.  Since low pressure casting utilizes similar production methods as gravity casting, this allows WedsSport designers to have greater options and flexibility on face design while exercising various ways to improve strength without adding material to save weight.

To compliment low pressure casting, Weds AMF (Advanced Metal Forming) is used to form the barrel. When the wheels are cast, they are also formed with an unshaped barrel. The unfinished wheel is then placed on a CNC lathe, which uses a high-pressure roller to “stretch” the barrel as the wheel is spun at high speed, all while being guided by a solid mold underneath. This spinning process creates an ultra-thin barrel with even higher alloy density and an incredibly compact grain structure.  When these two manufacturing methods are paired together, it allows us to make wheels which are the perfect blend of high strength, light weight and cost-effectiveness.

What is AMF?
AMF stands for Advanced Metal Forming.  It is a process used when forming the rim barrel, nowdays known as Flow-Forming or Spinning. 

In the early days, the majority of aluminum alloy wheels was made utilizing the casting process, where the entire wheel was cast and final touches were done through machining.  It served its purpose, but the result was a heavy wheel.  To better understand Weds AMF's advantages, let's start from the basics.
